Tips for Improving Your Optimism in 2021

It may seem cliche to ask this, but it’s a really good question: Are you a glass half-empty or a glass half-full type of person? Given the world we live in today, it’s so easy to be negative. In fact, some of us find a weird comfort in it, including myself. So I have decided that I am going to work on fixing that this year. And I hope that you come along with me for the ride, because I’m hoping you can get something out of it too.

Being optimistic doesn’t mean that you’re looking past the difficult situations you or others may be going through, however, it does mean switching up the way you go about solving those problems.

As we work our way through 2021, I’m here to share with you 5 ways that we can all improve our optimism.

1 – Embrace The Way You Feel

Optimistic doesn’t always mean that you’re “happy”. I think that’s a common mistake people associate with the word. Quite honestly, trying to force yourself to be happy when you’re definitely not happy is unhealthy both physically and emotionally.

No matter what situation you’re going through, be honest with yourself about how you feel about it, whether it’s good or not-so-good. By understanding what you’re feeling and why, you’ll find it easier to be optimistic as you push yourself forward.

2 – Highlight the Positive Parts of Your Life

So often we focus on the negative things that are affecting our lives. We do this so often that it often overshadows that positive things in our lives. Don’t take those small victories for granted… they mean a lot more than you may realize!

Take a moment and focus on the positive things that have happened, or are happening. Allowing yourself to enjoy these moments, even if their small, will help you in the grand scheme of being a little more positive!

3 – Write Down Positive Affirmations Each Day

Okay… this one a really cheesy, but I gotta tell you… it WORKS! I personally do this every day and it’s so worth it.

Every day, whether it’s when you first wake-up, or doing your lunch break, or when you head to bed for the night, take a moment and reflect on some positive words or statements. Write them down, save them, and then take a look at them later if you ever need a pick-me-up.

4 – Stop Comparing Yourself to Others

Personally, I am jealous of so many people. I am envious of their job, the money they make, the roles they get cast in, the car they drive, the relationship their in, etc. What I’ve taught myself to do, however, is to avoid those negative comparisons when they pop up into my brain.

Your life is your life. Accept it and do what you can do to improve it. The only person I try to be better than is me. Focus on being a better version of you today than you were yesterday.

5 – Do Things That Make You Happy

There are so many things that make you smile and laugh… there are so many things that make you truly happy… so embrace that!

Watch your favorite t.v. show or movie, go sing karaoke with your friends, cook your favorite meal, dance the night away… the options are endless. It’s just a matter of you going out to actually do it… so go do it!
