Everything We Know So Far About Epcot’s New ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Roller Coaster

A new Guardians of the Galaxy roller coaster is coming to EPCOT! Here is everything that we know so far about this brand-new, “cosmic” roller coaster!

THE ANNOUNCEMENT

A couple years ago, during the annual D23 convention California, Disney made the big announcement that a ride themed to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Guardians of the Galaxy films would be coming to the Future World section of Epcot. In the summer of 2019, more details emerged and revealed that the new ride would be called “Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind”, and would be quite the unique roller coaster, complete with a reverse launch.

THE RIDE LOCATION

The ride will be replacing the classic “Universe of Energy” attraction which closed it doors back in August 2017. While the “Universe of Energy” building will remain, that building is completely retrofitted in order to accommodate the huge new coaster. The main, thrill-section of the roller coaster will be housed in a brand-new show building that is being built behind the old “Universe of Energy” building.

THE RIDE EXPERIENCE

Not much is known at the moment about what story the ride will tell, but Lord knows that we’re all praying to the heavens above for some sort of an animatronic Baby Groot.. Here’s what we do know about the story so far:

  • The film’s characters will greet the guests and take us through a trip across the cosmos.
  • While this is a roller coaster, it will very much be a story-driven experience, complete with a compelling plot.
  • The cars on the roller coaster train will rotate 360 degrees, ensuring that the riders are always facing the action, fully immersing them.
  • The ride will feature a unique “reverse launch”.
  • The entire ride will be enclosed.

THE RIDE OPENING DATE

Disney hasn’t announced any specific dates yet, but we do know that the ride will open at some point in 2021.

EXCITED?!

With the construction of this coaster, along with the TRON: Lightcycle coaster that will be opening up at Magic Kingdom, it’s safe to say that Disney is finally doing what it can to compete with the growing popularity of its neighbor Universal Studios, which has a HUGE new park opening up soon, along with an always growing (and popular) Wizarding World of Harry Potter.
