Review: Matrix Resurrections Slightly Disappointing

I had such high hopes for Matrix Resurrections. Yes, I am one of the people that wholeheartedly defended Matrix Reloaded and Matrix Revolutions back in the day, simply because I truly believe those movies don’t get the credit they deserve. Matrix Resurrections, however, let me down.

WHAT WORKED

The Nostalgia

It’s been almost 20 years since the last feature Matrix movie, so it was so fun to revisit Neo and Trinity again. Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss still have insane chemistry after all of these years, and it was refreshing to watch.

It’s Very Meta

The film 100% acknowledges that it’s The Matrix and it’s legacy in our world. Not too many movies have the guts to do something like that, but this film really went there with it.

The Movie Is Charming

You’ll probably think I hated this film based off of the title of this blog and the critiques below, but it was charming. It’s a love story at the end of the day, with two people who are genuinely good and kind. That is the main reason why I was able to fight my way through finishing this movie.

WHAT DIDN’T WORK

The Pacing Is Awful

The movie starts off at a very good pace, given all of the set-up it requires to explain how and why Neo and Trinity aren’t actually dead. But once that’s established, the movie kind of falls flat on its face. The final third of the movie is… not good and doesn’t make too much sense.

The Old Cast is Sorely Missed

While Neil Patrick Harris, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Jessica Henwick and Jonathan Groff do their best to hold down the fort, they just don’t hold a candle to the people that originally made the series so memorable. Most notably, Laurence Fishburn and Hugo Weaving.

The Fight Scenes

There’s not a single memorable fight scene in this movie, which is the complete opposite of the original trilogy, where you could easily picture 2 or 3 memorable fight moments from each film. This one, doesn’t even try to match that What’s ironic is that the movie addresses that very topic throughout the film (in it’s meta form), but that doesn’t excuse the fact that it simply wasn’t fun to watch.

FINAL SCORE

While I had high expectations, at no point did I expect this installment to surpass or even come close to the original trilogy. Most of the typical critiques I can forgive, but overall, as much as I wanted to like this movie, it just wasn’t good. 

I am glad I didn’t pay a movie ticket price to see this (I watched it on HBO Max on my big screen tv). Perhaps I would have given this a higher score if I saw it on a giant screen, but the storytelling issues I have with this movie wouldn’t have saved it.
