3 Important Tips to Following Your Heart

‘Follow your heart’ is probably one of the most frustrating phrases of all time. As frustrating as it may be, it’s importance is unmeasured. Let’s be real, following your heart is not an easy thing to do, especially when you live a calculated, measured life.

Following your heart may be hard, but let’s be real… LIFE is hard. So why not follow your heart? Why not decide to take a risk and live out the life you really want to live?

Before we begin, it’s important for us to know what exactly it means to follow your heart. To me, following your heart is simply doing something that you feel is right for you. It could also mean that you’re following your dreams, following your desires, and following your passion.

With that said, today we’re going to explore three very important tips to follow your heart:

1 – That Feeling Living With Regret

Living with regret is never fun. Have you ever made a decision of some sort and thought to yourself, “What if?” It’s a confusing and frustrating way to live sometimes. While this is not necessarily a bad thing, it is something you should consider when deciding whether or not you should follow your heart.

Do yourself a favor, see yourself in both scenarios, one in which you follow your heart, and one in which you don’t. How do you feel in each scenario? Use these feelings to guide you in your decision. (Take Note: Do not be afraid to be honest with yourself. Accept your true emotions, you owe yourself that much.)

2 – Understand That You’re Not Following Your Heart, You’re Leading Your Heart

I think that we often stop ourselves from following our heart because we’re telling ourselves, “It doesn’t feel right yet” or “I’m not ready yet” or “I am not sure what I want exactly.” Look, there are no right or wrong answers here. Unless you’re some sort of mythical being, I’m pretty sure you don’t have a crystal ball that can see clearly into the future.

Sometimes it’s more than just following your heart, it’s leading it there. Your heart may know what it wants, but it’s not sure how to get there. If this is the case, you need to do what you can to take it there. Understand that your emotions are valid, but your plan to get to where you need/want to go, are just as important.

3 – It’s Time to Accept Change

Following your heart often means that you are going to be making some sort of significant change in your life. The fact that you’re reading this right now means that you may have already taken the first couple steps needed to make that change. That feeling you have right now, that’s the feeling of you already changing inside… it’s a weird, yet educational feeling.

Sometimes the change you seek may not be successful or fulfilling overnight, but in the long run, you’ll be happy with yourself because you decided to do what you felt was best, even when you didn’t really know what the outcome was going to be.

Where You Go From Here

We may not know each other, but I already know that you’ve made it this far, which means that you have what it takes to follow your heart. So do it. It is not up to you to listen to your heart and lead it directly where it wants to go. Be kind to yourself, be strategic, take a risk, and have fun while doing it. 🙂
