Work/Life Balance in 2023: Why It’s So Hard and What You Can Do About It

Hey, it’s Ky! As someone who wears many hats – entrepreneur, podcast host, and content creator – finding a work/life balance has always been a challenge. And I know I’m not alone. So, let’s talk about why it’s so hard to establish a work/life balance in 2023 and what we can do about it.

The Pressure to Hustle

Hustle culture is still going strong in 2023. We’re constantly being told to work harder, longer, and faster. The pressure to succeed can make us feel like we need to be working around the clock to rise to the top. When we feel like everyone around us is working all hours of the day, it’s hard to justify taking a break or setting boundaries.

But here’s the truth: working without rest is not sustainable. Burnout is a real thing, and it can have serious consequences on your physical and mental health. So, let’s make self-care a priority and embrace the power of a good work/life balance.

Technology is Always On

Technology has made our lives easier in many ways, but it’s also blurred the lines between work and personal time. Smartphones and laptops mean we’re always connected, making it harder to disconnect and unplug from work.

I’ve struggled with this myself. I’ll tell myself that I’m just going to check my email one more time before bed, only to find myself replying to emails for an hour. The constant connection to work can make it difficult to switch off and enjoy time with family and friends or pursue hobbies.

So how do we combat this? Setting boundaries is key. That could be as simple as turning off notifications during personal time or scheduling blocks of time throughout the day when you’re not available for work emails and calls.

Fear of Failure

In 2023, the stakes feel higher than ever. The world is changing fast, and there’s a lot of uncertainty. It can be easy to fall into the trap of feeling like you need to work harder and longer to stay ahead.

But here’s the thing: trying to do it all can lead to feeling overwhelmed, stressed, and ultimately, burnt out. Prioritizing your mental and emotional well-being is important for success. Resting and taking time for yourself will ultimately make you more productive in the long run.

How to Establish a Work/Life Balance

Establishing a work/life balance is an ongoing process. It’s not something that happens overnight. But there are many things you can do to create a more balanced life. Some of my go-to tips include:

  • Creating and sticking to a schedule that includes designated work time and personal time.
  • Practicing mindfulness and incorporating self-care routines, like exercise and meditation.
  • Unplugging from technology during personal time and setting boundaries with coworkers and clients.
  • Being realistic about what you can accomplish in a day and delegating or outsourcing tasks where possible.
  • Asking for help and support when needed, from friends and family or professionals.
