Hey Vibers! It’s your boy, Ky!

You know me, I’m all about spreading good vibes and laughs, but we need to talk about something that’s been bugging me on social media lately: toxic positivity. As someone who is deeply entrenched in the social media world, I’ve seen my fair share of “good vibes only” posts. But here’s the twist: sometimes, those posts can do more harm than good.

What is Toxic Positivity?

Toxic positivity is like having that one overly enthusiastic friend in your life who constantly insists that you smile your way through a tornado. It’s this belief that a positive mindset can overcome any obstacle, no matter how unrealistic that may be. Sure, positive thinking is great, but it becomes toxic when it invalidates real emotions and experiences.

My Brush with Toxic Positivity

There was once a time in my life when I thought that masking my internal struggles with a smile was always the answer. (Spoiler Alert: It wasn’t.) I realized that acknowledging and accepting my not-so-sunny days was crucial for my mental health. I know it sounds cliché, but it really is “okay to not be okay”.

Spotting Toxic Positivity on Social Media

Keep an eye out for posts that:

  • Dismiss negative emotions.
  • Push the idea that happiness is a choice, regardless of circumstances.
  • Oversimplify complex mental health issues.

Breaking Free from the Toxic Positivity Trap

Don’t be afraid to mute and/or unfollow someone: If a social media account you’re following makes you feel inadequate or invalidated, I think it’s time for you to hit that unfollow button. Choose content that truly resonates with you and your real-life experiences.

Keep a journal with you: This was huge for me. Write down your thoughts. It helps you understand and accept your emotions. It’s like this really effective DIY therapy session.

Let’s Talk About Emotions

It is essential that you embrace all emotions: the good, the bad, and the ugly. Sorry, not sorry, but life isn’t always rainbows and butterflies, and that’s perfectly fine.
