Hey, Vibers! It’s your boy, Ky!
I get asked this question a lot: How do I get tested for ADHD? It’s probably one of the most common questions that I get as an ADHD-centric content creator.
My Personal ADHD Journey
As someone who navigated these waters not so long ago, I understand the mix of curiosity, uncertainty, and eagerness that comes with this journey. Remember, over 366 million adults are dealing with ADHD symptoms, yet less than 20% get diagnosed and treated. That sure is a lot of us trying to make sense of our unique brains without much guidance!
My own path to an ADHD diagnosis started after being treated for severe depression and generalized anxiety. Despite my treatment, something still felt off. That’s when my psychiatrist suggested an ADHD test.
The process for me was VERY eye-opening. I was asked a series of questions over what felt like HOURS, focusing on my attention span, impulsivity, and daily challenges.
In the Fall of 2022, at 35 years of age, I was diagnosed with ADHD. It’s been a journey of self-discovery since then, learning how to manage my ADHD as an adult, seeing which treatments work best for me, and learning brand new coping mechanisms.
It hasn’t been super easy, but it’s a journey I am proud to be on. 100%.
How to Start Your ADHD Journey
So, how do YOU start this journey? Here’s a step-by-step guide:
Step 1: Check Yourself for Signs of ADHD
Adult ADHD signs are subtle. They range from inattention (like missing deadlines, getting easily distracted) to hyperactivity and impulsivity (fidgeting, interrupting conversations). Reflect on your daily challenges. Do they align with these symptoms?
Step 2: Learn about the DSM-5 Criteria for ADHD
The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders sets specific criteria for an ADHD diagnosis. It includes having at least five symptoms of inattention or hyperactivity, symptoms present for six months or more, and impacting multiple areas of your life.
Step 3: Rate Your Symptoms (But Don’t Self-Diagnose)
Online ADHD tests can be a starting point to understanding your symptoms. However, they’re not diagnostic tools. A real diagnosis needs an in-depth evaluation.

Step 4: Discuss Your Condition with Your Primary Care Physician
Your family doctor or primary care physician can be a great first contact. They might diagnose you or refer you to a specialist.
Step 5: Find a Qualified Medical Professional to Diagnose You
Psychologists, psychiatrists, neurologists, or even your family doctor can diagnose ADHD. Each has its own strengths. Choose what feels right for you.
Step 6: Complete a Comprehensive ADHD Evaluation
This involves interviews, questionnaires, and possibly a physical examination. It’s thorough, but necessary to understand your unique brain.
Step 7: Learn About Your Treatment Options
From medications to talk therapy and ADHD coaching, several options can help manage ADHD symptoms. Work with your doctor to find what suits you best.

Your Journey Begins Now!
Remember, undiagnosed ADHD can lead to challenges in your career, your relationships, and everyday tasks. Getting diagnosed and treated can be life-changing. It certainly was for me.
