Why I Struggle With Staying Patient With Myself & How I Fight It

As I’ve been chronicling my self-love and good vibes journey, there’s one question that people always ask me: “What’s one thing that you need to work on above anything else?” The answer has been the same for years and it remains the same on the very day I write this: I need to work on staying patient with myself.

Have you ever sat there at work or at home frustrated with yourself for not being where you think you should be? Frustrated with yourself because of what you feel is a lack of accomplishments, adventures, and personal development?

This probably sounds familiar to many of you reading this right now. I’m 100% my own worst critic, and there is nothing that anyone can say to me that I haven’t already said to myself, or worse.

It’s for this reason that I’ve been working my butt off to improve my mindset and patience. By working on this every day, I am learning how to take the attention away from the things in my life that I consider to me negative. Instead of focusing on the negative, I have been working on focusing my time and energy on the positivity in my life, including the self-improvement plan I have myself on.

Since this is a journey that I am still working on personally, I figured I’d share my journey with you in this regard as well. Here are three things I tell myself every time I find myself growing impatient with where I am in life.

“I often remind myself that life is a marathon, not a 100 meter dash.”

1 – “Take it one day at a time.”

Have you ever wanted to sleep the problems away? As in go to sleep one night and then wake up the next day reaching the level of accomplishment you were looking for?

That’d be nice. Unfortunately, that’s quite rare. So you can’t rely on that mindset.

I often remind myself that life is a marathon, not a 100 meter dash. The work I am putting in today is the work that will pay off for me in the future. I literally have a tattoo on my arm that read “Paciencia y fe” which means “patience and faith”. I will have faith that the work I am doing today will pay off in the long run.

I hate that we have this mindset that if we’re not being productive then we’re doing something wrong.

2 – “Enjoy the right now.”

This is one of my favorite things to think about every day. This is where I allow myself to have a little fun as opposed to living with frustration, as should you. Living in the moment may sound cliche, but it’s really what you should be doing sometimes.

I once had a conversation with another influencer this summer and she had the mindset that we should only do things that are productive, or it’s a waste of time. I couldn’t disagree with that more. We need to toss away that misconception, live in the moment, and enjoy what’s right in front of us.

I hate that we have this mindset that if we’re not being productive then we’re doing something wrong. I hate it because productivity is often equated with self-worth, so when we’re not being “productive” then we’re not being worthy, which leads to this increased anxiety, which then leads to living a life of impatience with yourself. Nobody wants that.

3 – “Just as you have empathy for others, you need to have empathy for yourself.”

I blogged a couple weeks ago about being an empath and everything that comes with that. I often need to remind myself that being empath also means feeling empathy for myself and my own situations.

Sometimes the friend we really need as we continue our self-development journey is ourselves. We need to have a sense of hope from within, and with hope comes patience.

“You are right where you need to be, and you will learn and grow from here.”

Final Thoughts

You’re a human being. You are not a robot. You are allowed to feel the things that you are feeling right now. But you must also allow yourself to grow. When you allow yourself to embrace patience and understand what’s within yourself, then you will no longer feel as though you are not where you should be. You are right where you need to be, and you will learn and grow from here.
