What We Talked About (And Why It Matters)

Here’s a breakdown of what made this episode so special—and helpful.

1. ADHD Coaching for Adults: What It Actually Is

ADHD coaching is not about “fixing” ADHD. Instead, it’s about learning how to work with your brain instead of against it.

According to the CDC, around 6% of U.S. adults live with ADHD, and many are only diagnosed later in life. That means a lot of us are playing catch-up in a world that wasn’t built for us.

Alex described coaching as a way to build systems that support how you function. Think of it as personalized guidance to help you build habits, stay motivated, manage your time, and feel less alone.

2. Habit Formation Is Not One-Size-Fits-All

One of the most powerful takeaways? Habit building for adults with ADHD is not linear.

Alex explained that ADHD brains often need flexible structure:

  • Too much rigidity? We give up.
  • Too much freedom? We drift off.

Her advice? Create “low-bar” versions of your habits.
Can’t do a 30-minute workout? Try a 2-minute stretch.
Can’t clean the whole kitchen? Start with the dishes.

It’s about consistency, not intensity.

3. Time Blindness & Energy Management

“Time blindness” is real. So is running out of steam halfway through your to-do list.

Alex recommends:

  • Using timers and reminders intentionally
  • Creating routines with flexibility
  • Being mindful of your energy—what boosts it, and what drains it

One of my favorite tips from her? Think of your energy like a battery. You have to charge it just as much as you use it.

4. Dopamine Hacking & Fun Tools

ADHD brains crave dopamine. Alex talked about “dopamine hacking” as a way to make boring tasks more engaging. Some fun strategies included:

  • Turning tasks into a race or game
  • Rewarding yourself with breaks or treats
  • Using color-changing lights or music to set the mood

She even shared how one of her clients programmed lights in their workspace to change color based on the time of day—how cool is that?

5. Body Doubling (And Yes, Even for Introverts Like Me)

Body doubling is when someone is physically or virtually present while you work. It helps with focus and motivation. Alex hosts weekly body doubling sessions and swears by them.

And guess what? You don’t need to be in a Zoom call to body double. It can be:

  • A quiet phone call
  • A text check-in
  • Even just saying your intentions out loud to someone

Action Step: Create a “Low-Energy” Version of a Task You’re Avoiding

Pick one task that feels hard today.
Now, scale it down.

  • Instead of cleaning your whole bedroom, put away just your socks.
  • Instead of writing the whole email, write just the subject line.

Set a timer for 5 minutes and start there. You might surprise yourself.

FAQ

Q: Is ADHD coaching covered by insurance?
A. Most ADHD coaching is not currently covered by insurance, but many providers (like Shimmer) offer payment plans or discounts like the one listed above.

Q: Can I use ADHD coaching alongside therapy or medication?
A. Yes! ADHD coaching works well alongside other treatments. It focuses on real-world implementation and executive function skills, while therapy may focus more on emotional health and trauma.

Q: What’s the difference between ADHD coaching and life coaching?
A. ADHD coaching is more specialized. It focuses specifically on challenges like time blindness, emotional regulation, and habit formation—things that ADHDers deal with daily.

Final Thoughts

This episode reminded me that managing ADHD as an adult isn’t about becoming someone different—it’s about learning to meet yourself where you are.

Alex reminded us that ADHD coaching isn’t about fixing you. It’s about supporting you. Coaching helps you find your own rhythm and take back control in a world that often feels like it moves too fast.
